My first post pretty much says what I am about, but I’ll reiterate briefly to review:
I recently graduated from Barnard College of Columbia University (BA in Religion) and from List College of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America (BA in Bible).
I will be leaving July 8, 2008 for a year’s volunteer work in Mumbai, India with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, through the Jewish Service Corps. The JDC is a non-profit organization that supplies aid to Jews and non-Jews outside of the United States, in over 60 countries around the world. My work will involve primarily education and community development among the Bene Israel Jewish community in Mumbai (formerly Bombay and still often referred to as such).
At any rate, I intend that this blog function as a mode in which those important to my life may keep up with my goings-on and through which anyone interested in my work or in India may read about my time there. So, enjoy!

ariel,
i am so sorry about your uncle don. i hope this email makes it to you. i guess i could check w/your mom about your email address, but i get such odd hours on the computer that i figured i’d try this. i hope picabo is doing better and not chewing on cables, and that your sunburn and bug bites are gone, or almost gone. you look so beautiful in your birthday photos. i’m glad you had people to celebrate with.
your postings are wonderful. how many thoughts must race through your mind as you continue to adjust to life in india, while so much of you other than the physical part remains here in the states w/friends and family. what an extraordinary journey you’ve bravely taken. i hope you continue to take heart in knowing how many of us back here think of you as you follow this path that you inevitably had to take.
hilly and matty send their love!
and alan too.

Hello, Ariel:
I am Arun’s father; we met this past summer. Hope things are getting back to some semblance of normalcy after those horrific attacks.

Hi Ariel,
I am so excited that your mom and Rick are there visiting with you. I cannot wait to hear all of the details about your adventures together. We are now feeling teased by Spring in the air here in Albany and seeing longer days and more sunshine. Everyone seems happier. How are you? How is the picabo meister?? Isn’t it the best having a kitty? Does Picabo sleep right next to you? Soon you will be home and you can meet Wills. He and Theo are now best buds and I have to say, getting Wills was one of the best decisions I ever made. For theo, for me, for uncle robb. We are having a big “fam” bash at the house for Labor day Weekend, and I hope you are home to enjoy it with us. Gram and Gramps will be coming up from Fla, Abby will be home, Syd said she is coming, of course your mom and Rick, and cousins Carol /Stacy and Aunt Estelle too. It will be so nice to have everyone together for a happy occasion.
Have fun with your Mom in Mumbai!!!
Keep me posted on your travels!
Love,
Aunt Vicki

Ariel,
I found your blog through the JDC’s service corps website. I just returned last night from Argentina with the JDC short term service trip. The trip was truly amazing. I will be graduating this August and am currently looking into doing the year long volunteer work with the JSC. I am curious to hear what your thoughts are on the program and any advice you could give.
Thanks,
Susan
